Meta ads for brands with something to say.

Meta is a creative-led channel wearing a targeting-led costume. The algorithm now handles most of what media buyers used to control, which means the lever that still moves is what people actually see.

The problem

Rising costs, falling returns, no clear reason.

Costs climb, returns sag, and the account gives you no obvious explanation. So you rotate interests, rebuild audiences, try a new objective, and get a brief lift that fades within a fortnight.

What is usually happening is creative fatigue meeting an over-segmented account. The audience has seen everything you have. Meanwhile the budget is split so finely across ad sets that none of them gathers enough data to optimise, so the algorithm never gets out of learning.

Why it persists

Targeting stopped being the lever.

A decade ago, granular interest targeting was the edge. Meta's algorithm is now considerably better at finding buyers than any manual audience you can construct, provided you give it room and clean signal. Most underperforming accounts are strangling it with segmentation designed for a platform that no longer exists.

The constraint moved to creative. Not production polish — volume and variety of angle. MOR Collections hit 5X ROAS on content she had already made, because the problem was never the assets. It was the structure around them and the order the story was told in.

The method

How we actually do it.

No black box. This is the sequence, and the order matters more than any individual step.

  1. 01

    Consolidate the account

Fewer campaigns, broader targeting, budget concentrated enough that the algorithm exits learning and stays out. Most accounts we take over are running triple the ad sets they need, each starved of the data required to optimise properly.

  2. 02

    Produce angles, not assets

The unit of testing is the angle — the reason someone should care — not the crop or the caption. We map the distinct arguments for your product, then produce against each. This is where mission-led brands usually go wrong: leading with values that justify a purchase rather than the desire that triggers it. Indosole earned the click on the product and closed on the recycled rubber.

  3. 03

    Fix the destination

Meta traffic is colder than search traffic and needs a landing experience built for interruption rather than intent. Boardies reached 2X ROAS in fourteen days, but only after the conversion rate had already doubled and order value was up 52%. The ads did not change the economics; the destination did.

FAQ

Straight answers.

How much creative do we actually need?

More than feels reasonable, and less polished than you would expect. A handful of genuinely different angles beats twenty variations of one idea. Volume matters because fatigue is now the main cause of decay, and most brands under-produce by a wide margin.

Does iOS tracking loss still break everything?

It made attribution murkier, not impossible. With server-side conversions API and clean event setup, signal quality recovers most of the way. The bigger adjustment is judging performance on blended metrics rather than trusting in-platform attribution literally.

Can you use content we already have?

Often, yes — and it is usually the fastest path to a first result. MOR reached 5X on existing content. If your library genuinely lacks variety of angle we will say so, but we check before recommending a shoot.

Meta or Google first?

Depends on whether people are already searching for what you sell. Established demand favours Google. A new category, or a product people did not know they wanted, favours Meta. Most e-commerce brands eventually run both, and each makes the other cheaper.
